Termed the “smart mushroom” by world renowned mycologist Paul Stamets, Lions Mane mushrooms stimulate the production of nerve growth factor (NGF) having a potential protective and regenerative effect on the central and peripheral nervous system.
The fruiting body of Lions Mane contains a molecule called hericenones which when consumed pass through the brain-barrier and stimulate the release of NGF. NGF is known to decline as we age and therefore keeping levels of NGF up has important implications for neuron health and cognitive function.
