One of the questions I get asked by friends and family is how mushrooms are grown and I often don’t know where to start.

Most people, in my experience, think the process is similar to growing plants or vegetables but, in many ways, mushroom cultivation is a lot more complex so when I start to explain the process I often see the persons eyes start to glaze over after a short while. So, this video is basic and brief.

The process begins with a mushroom and, all going well, will end with several mushrooms.

There are various paths that can be taken to achieve each stage within the cultivation process but essentially there are three steps:

  1. A piece of mushroom is used to cultivate mycelium.
  2. The mycelium is transferred onto grain to create grain spawn.
  3. Grain spawn is then used to inoculate the main substrate on which the mushrooms will grow.
