The fruiting body of Oyster mushrooms contain immune supporting and anti-ageing polysaccharides as well as lovastatin, a compound known to help reduce Very Low Density Lipoproteins (VLDL) such as Cholesterol.
Much like some other mushroom polysaccharides, those found in oyster mushrooms are particularly effective at stimulating an immune response without adding toxicity or physiological strain to the human body.
One of the reasons why our skin and body shows signs of ageing as we get older is due to free-radicals. To help prevent too much damage happening too quickly the body has a counter measure in the form of enzymes such as catalase, superoxide and glutathione peroxidase which breakdown and clear free radicals. Interestingly, research shows that polysaccharides found within P. ostreatus increases the activity of these anti-ageing enzymes.
