What are the medicinal benefits?

Commonly recognised as a popular edible mushroom, Shiitake (lat. Lentinula edodes) is also gaining a lot of interest due to its powerful medicinal properties.

Most of the scientific research into the active medicinal compounds identified within Shiitake has largely been focused on the anti-tumour effects. In particular is the polysaccharide Lentinan, which, when highly refined is licenced in Japan to be used to help treat gastric cancer.

However, there are other promising medicinal benefits of the Shiitake mushroom currently being investigated such as helping to control cholesterol levels, proven to support the immune system, help protect the liver and contains anti-viral and anti-fungal qualities.

What we can say about the fruiting body of Shiitake is that it contains one of the highest quantities of the so called ‘feel good hormone’ serotonin found within the mushroom kingdom.

Another ‘feel good’ mushroom is the Honey mushroom. Read more about the medicinal qualities of Honey mushroom: CLICK HERE
